CARNIVOROUS PLANT INSTRUCTIONS

FLY TRAP

Zone: Zones 7-10. Can be grown indoors anywhere.

Size (in diameter):

Akai Ryu 2”-5”,

Dente 3”-6”

King Henry 3-6”. Has one of the largest traps!

Temperature/Humidity: 55-85℉. Keep humidity over 50%.

Pet Friendly: Yes! This plant is non-toxic, and safe to grow around pets.

Edible: No. This plant is not edible.

Soil: Planting in a mixture of Sphagnum Peat Moss & Perlite is recommended (There are more environmentally-friendly options online). Carnivorous plant potting mixes work well too. Do not use any kind of fertilizers, Miracle Gro, or Peat Moss that has fertilizer in it! Fertilizer will burn the roots & harm the plant.

Lighting: Many hours of good sunlight or a gro-light each day. Shorten lighting hours during the winter months.

Water: Choose a small pot with a hole at the bottom, and sit it in a tray of water. Fly Traps need pure water such as Distilled or Rainwater. Replace water when the tray is empty.

Other Tips:

  • May be potted indoors or outdoors in a safe environment during the warm months. Not recommended in a yard or garden.
  • Your Fly Trap may arrive all green. The red color inside the traps comes in after being exposed to lots of sunlight.
  • An outdoor Fly Trap is free to catch its own bugs. If indoors, you may manually give it alive or dead bugs. Please do research before giving your plant an insect, as some bugs can be damaging to the Fly Trap. Insects will provide nutrients for the plant!
  • Opening/closing each trap uses the plant’s energy. Each may open/close around 12 times before that trap will die. It is normal for single traps to turn dark and die every so-often. New traps will eventually grow to take its place. It is very cool to watch the traps close, but please refrain from constantly touching them.
  • In the spring, a stalk may begin to grow and will eventually bloom a flower in the center of the plant. You may collect seeds from the flower later on if you choose to let it grow. Please note that the flower takes a great deal of energy away from the fly traps, so many growers cut the flower stalk at around 3-5cm tall.
  • Even Fly Traps that live indoors need a resting period during the winter months. If an indoor plant, move it to a bit cooler location and cut down on watering a bit. The plant will begin to turn black and die back. You may re-pot your Fly Trap the following spring and start the yearly cycle over again.
